The Rashtriya military schools in Indian subcontinent were started in 1925 with establishment of Chail Military School (King George Royal Indian Military College) in Jalandhar (in India) and Military College Jhelum (King George Royal Indian Military College) in Jhelum (now in Pakistan) and later on Ajmer, Bangalore, Belgaum and Dholpur were started by Government of India. Rashtriya Military School, Ajmer with its panoramic view of surrounding hills, spread over nearly 87 acres at a prime location was founded on 15 november 1930 as King George Royal Indian Military School to take care of the education of the sons of defence personnel. In 1952, the school was reorganized on Public School lines and admissions were made open to the sons of defence service officers and civilians. In 1954, this school became member of the Indian Public Schools Conference (IPSC) and continues to be an active member till date. The school was renamed as Military School in 1966 and its old motto, Play The Game was replaced with "Sheelam Param Bhushanam" i.e. "Character is the Highest Virtue." On 25th june 2007 the school got its present name "Rashtriya Military School, Ajmer." There are four more Rashtriya Military Schools located at Chail (Shimla hills), Dholpur (Raj.), Bangalore and Belgaum (Karnataka) having commonality of aims and objectives. In 1962 the fifth school was started at Dholpur in Rajasthan. The King George School Nowgong was relocated to its current location in Chail in Himachal Pradesh on 1 July 1960. It was renamed as Chail Military School, Chail. In Jan 1966 these KG schools were re-designated to Military Schools. Cadets are assigned to houses. They are classified as sub-juniors, juniors and seniors respectively depending upon their class of study. Cadets compete in sports, physical training, academics, cross country, drill and various other competitions to win their house trophy.The Rashtriya Military Schools Society is an organization under the Ministry of Defence. The Chief Executive Body of the Rashtriya Military Schools Society is a Board of Governors functioning under the Chairmanship of the Defence Minister. For exercising closer control and supervision over the affairs of Rashtriya Military Schools there is an Executive Committee under the Chairmanship of Defence Secretary. The day-to-day work of the Society is managed by Dir (Trg) & Hony Secy who is assisted by Inspecting Officers, Under Secretary, Rashtriya Military Schools Society and SO(Rashtriya Military Schools Cell). The staff for the cell is provided by the MoD. The local administration of the school is looked after by a Local Board of Administration whose Chairman is the GoC-in-C of the concerned Command where the Rashtriya Military Schools is located.
